Passport issue keeps Giants punter Jamie Gillan in London

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan did not travel back with the team from London, sources told ESPN. He remains overseas as he deals with a passport issue. The Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers 27-22 on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They were aware of the issue prior to the trip, and expect him back this week before playing the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. New York did not work out any punters on Tuesday as a contingency. Gillan, nicknamed the "Scottish Hammer," is a native of Inverness, Scotland. He came to the United States as a teenager. Gillan did not play football until midway through his senior season of high school in Maryland. This is his fourth professional season. He is averaging 51.0 yards per punt in his first year with the Giants. The NFL Network reported that Gillan came to the U.S. on a NATO visa with this father, and that was never changed to a work visa when he entered the NFL.

Yordan Alvarez hits 3-run walk-off HR as Astros win Game 1

HOUSTON -- Yordan Alvarez smashed a game-ending, three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning off Robbie Ray, wrecking the Seattle Mariners' strategy of using a Cy Young Award winner in a rare relief role and vaulting the Houston Astros to an 8-7 victory Tuesday in their playoff opener. Trailing all game after a poor start by Justin Verlander, the AL West champion Astros overtook rookie star Julio Rodriguez and the wild-card Mariners at the end to begin their best-of-five division series. Houston was down 7-5 when rookie pinch-hitter David Hensley reached with one out in the ninth as Seattle closer Paul Sewald grazed his jersey with a pitch. Sewald struck out Jose Altuve before Jeremy Pena laced a single to center field to chase Sewald. Mariners manager Scott Servais then made the bold move to bring in Ray, who started Saturday at Toronto in the AL Wild Card Series, for a lefty vs. lefty matchup...

Nick Castellanos leads way for Phillies in NLDS Game 1 win

ATLANTA -- Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos called the postseason a "fresh start" for him after helping his team to a 7-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Tuesday.  Castellanos, 30, had three hits and three RBI, plus a ninth-inning, diving catch in right field to help seal the win for the visiting team.  "It's kind of just a fresh start, a clean slate, so to speak," Castellanos said after the game. "And obviously these games are really intense. For me, that helps me lock in and kind of slow things down. It's just a lot of fun. "Baseball is really, really fun." That may not have been the case for the veteran for much of the regular season, as his numbers were well below his career averages. He compiled an OPS-plus of just 95, the lowest of his 10-year career. "The one thing that all of us in this room share in common is we want to contribute to the club as much as we can every...

Sources: Hornets' LaMelo Ball (ankle) to miss 1-2 weeks

Charlotte Hornets All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball is expected to miss one to two weeks because of his sprained left ankle, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday. The Hornets had earlier announced that an MRI confirmed that Ball has a sprained ankle and his return to full basketball activities would be determined by how he responds to rehab and treatment, adding that further updates on his status will be provided as appropriate. Ball left Monday night's preseason game against the Washington Wizards after his left foot was stepped on by  Anthony Gill as he was driving toward the basket. Ball collapsed to the floor and remained there for several minutes before getting up, limping to the foul line and shooting two free throws. He then exited the game and headed to the locker room. Hornets head coach Steve Clifford said after practice that Ball and injured center Mason Plumlee (foot) will not travel with the team to Philadelphia for...

Commanders' Ron Rivera apologizes to Carson Wentz for 'QB' remark

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera apologized to quarterback Carson Wentz for comments Rivera said were misconstrued by some Monday, regarding why there's a gulf between his rebuilding team and its NFC East rivals. "Carson and I had a nice conversation, so I think we're ready to roll," Rivera said. He also spoke to his team about the comments he made Monday. On that day, Rivera was asked why the Commanders were 1-4 in his third season compared with the other teams in the division, which are all at least 4-1. Rivera answered, "Quarterback." He later said the other teams' quarterbacks had been in place longer than Wentz had in Washington. The Commanders traded for Wentz this past offseason; Rivera said the quarterback is still getting comfortable in the offense and with teammates. Rivera said they now have a quarterback they can build around. But his initial one-word answer drew national attention, with former Washington quarterback Alex Smith...

Kentucky's Oscar Tshiebwe to undergo 'minor' knee procedure

Kentucky forward Oscar Tshiebwe, last season's consensus National Player of the Year, will undergo a "minor" knee procedure, according to coach John Calipari. Calipari offered few details on Tshiebwe's injury, which he posted about on Twitter. "I have good news and bad news," Calipari wrote in the first of two tweets. "Good news is Oscar had an unbelievable performance at Pro Day and the scouts loved what they saw. He came back to develop his game and become a more complete player and that's exactly what he displayed Saturday night. They loved it. "Bad news is I kept him out of practice Sat. with knee stuff. He refused to sit out Pro Day and balled out. I made him sit out Mon. and get examined as a precaution. He's going to have a minor 15-minute procedure to clean some things up. Not a big deal, but no dancing at Madness!" Tshiebwe, a 6-foot-9 Congo native, filled his trophy cabinet last spring, sweeping the Wooden Award, Naismith Player of the Year,...

Ex-Angels employee gets 22 years in death of Tyler Skaggs

FORT WORTH, Texas -- A former Los Angeles Angels employee was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison Tuesday for providing Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs the drugs that led to his overdose death in Texas. Eric Kay, dressed in an orange jumpsuit with handcuffs and leg shackles, didn't react when U.S. District Judge Terry R. Means read his sentence. Kay faced at least 20 years in prison on one of the two counts. There was no reaction from Skaggs' widow and mother or members of Kay's family, including one of his sons who read a statement on his behalf before sentencing. A bailiff had warned observers they would be removed from the court over any outbursts. Prosecutors presented evidence of Kay, 48, making derogatory comments about Skaggs, his family, prosecutors and jurors in phone calls and emails after he was convicted in February. There was emotional testimony from both sides in federal court in Fort Worth, about 15 miles from where the Angels were supposed to open a...

Raiders' Josh McDaniels supports Davante Adams after incident

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels voiced his support for wide receiver Davante Adams on Tuesday afternoon, hours after a police report was taken on Adams pushing down a man at the conclusion of the Raiders' 30-29 loss at the Kansas City Chiefs on his way to the locker room Monday night. And although ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Adams is facing discipline from the NFL, McDaniels said he did not yet know "what may or may not come" from the league. "I support Davante wholeheartedly as a human being," McDaniels said. "As a person, he's a great guy. I know that was an unfortunate situation. We obviously don't want any of our guys to be doing anything like that. He knows that. He's very well aware of that. But I know the person; I don't think there was any intent behind it, on his part. "But whatever [the NFL] asks of us, whatever they need from us, obviously we'll comply. But we're kind of in a wait-and-see [situation] at this...

Nets say Ben Simmons needs time to regain confidence, rhythm

NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets are doing everything they can to make Ben Simmons feel comfortable in his new surroundings after being away from an NBA floor for almost a year while dealing with back surgery and mental health concerns, but Nets coach Steve Nash acknowledged that what Simmons may need most is time. "We'll be patient with Ben because he is an incredibly talented and unique player, but he's not going to be at his best in the short term and he's just got to continue to slog through this period of returning to play and getting his confidence, timing and rhythm back," Nash said. Nash and several Nets players have held to a similar refrain throughout training camp, but the comments have taken on a different tenor after Simmons struggled at times in his first two preseason games. In a combined 44 minutes, Simmons has scored 10 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out nine assists and committed eight turnovers. The larger issue for the Nets is that while...

Mike Tomlin on Steelers' struggles: 'It starts with me'

PITTSBURGH -- In the aftermath of the Pittsburgh Steelers' worst loss in more than three decades, Mike Tomlin took accountability and owned his team's failures Tuesday. "We were a disaster in all three phases, and we have to own that, starting with myself and I do," Tomlin said. "... When it's that bad across the board, it starts with me. We don't need to seek comfort, because there's enough blame to go around. We need to be solution-oriented." After the 38-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday dropped his team to 1-4 with four consecutive losses, Tomlin said he would consider making any changes necessary to get the team going in the right direction. The loss to the Bills was the Steelers' most lopsided defeat of the season. Even with a quarterback change, the Steelers recorded their lowest scoring output, while allowing the Bills to score 38 points -- the most allowed by the Steelers' defense this season. The Steelers are averaging 6.1 passing yards per attempt,...

Brett Favre denies wrongdoing in welfare case, blames media

"I have been unjustly smeared in the media," Favre said in the statement, which Fox News Digital published Tuesday. "I have done nothing wrong, and it is past time to set the record straight. "No one ever told me, and I did not know, that funds designated for welfare recipients were going to the University or me. I tried to help my alma mater USM [University of Southern Mississippi], a public Mississippi state university, raise funds for a wellness center. Source: Baker Mayfield tests OK but QB likely out 2-6 weeks

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Even though quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to miss two to six weeks with a high ankle sprain, Carolina Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks believes he has the talent to turn around a 1-4 team that just fired its head coach. Tests on Mayfield's high ankle sprain revealed no other structural damage, but the injury has an expected two- to six-week timeline to heal, a source close to the quarterback told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday. Mayfield wants to try to play on the injury as early as possible, but that will be an uphill battle, the source said. "We have the men that want to get it done,'' Wilks said Tuesday at his introductory news conference in which owner David Tepper was in the audience. "Our work ethic has been consistent from the standpoint of how we go about each and every day practicing. "We just have to go out in games and execute and finish. So I feel very confident in the men that we have in knowing we're going to turn the...

Source: NFL to mull roughing the passer penalties after season

The NFL's competition committee plans to discuss roughing the passer penalties after the season amid outrage over two disputed calls in Week 5, a member of the committee who wishes to remain anonymous told ESPN's Ed Werder. The Associated Press, which reported earlier Tuesday that the topic also will be discussed next week when NFL owners meet in New York but that the league was not planning in-season rule changes, said the NFL has not given officials a directive to emphasize roughing calls following Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's concussion.  The NFL's competition committee -- composed of six team owners/executives and four head coaches -- makes most of the recommendations for rule changes. Teams can also propose rule changes, which require 24 votes to pass, to be voted on by owners. One idea, suggested by  Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones on Monday night after he was flagged, might be to allow video review of...

Philadelphia Phillies' David Robertson hurt celebrating, out of NLDS

Philadelphia Phillies reliever David Robertson is out of the division series against the Atlanta Braves with a celebration injury. Manager Rob Thomson said Robertson strained his right calf jumping up in the air when Bryce Harper homered against the Cardinals in the last round. Phillies-Braves Game 1 is Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta. "He's devastated," Thomson said of Robertson, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "He knows how big a part he is to this club." The 37-year-old Robertson was effective for the Phillies after an August trade from the Cubs -- posting six saves in 11 games with a 2.70 ERA. He threw one inning against St. Louis in Game 1 of the wild-card series and picked up a win. The Phillies used a closer-by-committee approach for a chunk of the season. Nobody on the team had more than 12 saves. Converted starter  Zach Eflin picked up his first save in Game 2 against the Cardinals.

Grady Jarrett still in 'disbelief' over flagged Tom Brady hit

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said he was in "not a little but a lot disbelief" at the roughing the passer flag thrown on him when he sacked Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady late in Sunday's 21-15 Buccaneers win over the Falcons. Jarrett's comments, on his weekly appearance on 680 The Fan in Atlanta, were his first since postgame Sunday, when he said he was too emotional about the flag and the outcome to speak clearly about what had happened. Even days later, he's not sure what he was supposed to do differently. "Just looking back on it, I'm still kind of left clueless," Jarrett said. "On what I'm expected to do in that situation." Jarrett had wrapped Brady up and then rolled to the ground, bringing Brady down with him. Jarrett made contact with the ground first and then turned over, finishing the sack. Referee Jerome Boger called the penalty and, in a pool report after the game, said Jarrett "unnecessarily" threw Brady to the...

Braves rookie Spencer Strider (oblique) makes playoff roster

Rookie  Spencer Strider, who hasn't pitched since Sept. 18 because of an oblique injury, has been included on the Atlanta Braves' roster prior to Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. A decision on whether he will be used as a starter or reliever has yet to be made. Braves manager Brian Snitker said Strider will throw on the side before Tuesday's matchup against Philadelphia but would not be available to pitch in Game 1.  "He's succeeded in both roles," Braves catcher Travis d'Arnaud said Monday. "Just to have him out there is big for us and would be tremendous." Strider, who turns 24 this month, has made just 33 big league appearances, but he has quickly become one of the team's most popular players with his 100 mph fastball and bushy mustache. The right-hander signed a six-year, $75 million deal with the Braves on Monday. Strider, who threw off a mound on Sunday, said he feels...

Ohio State passes Alabama, Georgia as CFP title betting favorite

There's a new favorite atop the odds to win the national championship at sportsbooks, and for the first time in nearly two years, it doesn't hail from the SEC. Ohio State moved past Alabama and Georgia this week to become the consensus favorite to win the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes are +200 at Caesars Sportsbook, followed by the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs each at +220. It marks the first time since November 2020 that a team other than Alabama or Georgia has been the consensus favorite. The Buckeyes, Bulldogs and Crimson Tide have been atop the national championship odds all season and account for nearly 60% of the money wagered on BetMGM's odds to win the national championship. They are the only teams with single-digit title odds. Clemson is 12-1 and USC is 16-1, followed by Michigan at 20-1. Tennessee, which hosts Alabama this week, is at 40-1. Ohio State got off to a slow start in an opening win over Notre Dame but has...

Ref: Chris Jones landed on Derek Carr with full body weight, hence flag

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Referee Carl Cheffers said he followed the roughing the passer rule when he penalized  Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones late in the first half of Kansas City's come-from-behind 30-29 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night. The Chiefs had just scored to trim their deficit to 17-7 when Jones stripped the ball from Raiders quarterback Derek Carr just before halftime. Jones landed on Carr while also coming up with the ball -- replays showed it was clearly loose and that Jones cleanly recovered it -- but Cheffers threw a flag for roughing the passer. Cheffers, in a pool report following the game, explained that he saw Jones land on Carr with his full body weight while the quarterback was in the pocket. Cheffers said Carr "gets full protection of all aspects of what we give the quarterback in a passing posture. So when he was tackled, my ruling was the defender landed on him with full body weight. Josh McDaniels, Raiders 'all-in' on aggressive playcall late

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels defended his decision to attempt a 2-point conversion rather than kick a game-tying extra point late in the fourth quarter Monday night, a call that his players supported, as well.  And they did so even as the attempt failed, with the Raiders ultimately losing to the Chiefs 30-29 to fall to 1-4 entering their bye week. "I felt like in that situation, [Kansas City] had a lot of momentum offensively, obviously in the second half," McDaniels said. "We had a play that we felt really good about. I thought we would get a look that gave us a shot at it." Josh Jacobs, who rushed for a career-high 154 yards with a touchdown on 21 carries, was stuffed just shy of the goal line with 4:27 still remaining on the game clock. "That's what we wanted," Jacobs said. "We knew we was going to be in that situation. It's crazy, all week we were talking about third-and-1s, fourth-and-1s, 2-point play. "When I got the...

Raiders' Davante Adams pushes person postgame, apologizes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams shoved a credentialed person on the field carrying equipment in the aftermath of Monday night's 30-29 loss at the Kansas City Chiefs. Adams later issued an apology. "I want to apologize to the guy, there was some guy running off the field, and he ran, like jumped in front of me coming off the field and I bumped into him, kind of pushed him, and he ended up on the ground," Adams said at his locker. "So I wanted to say sorry to him for that because that was just frustration mixed with him literally just running in from of me. I shouldn't have responded that way, but that's how I initially responded. So, I want to apologize to him for that." Chargers' Brandon Staley: Grew 'closer' with Keenan Allen after tweet

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley expressed no second thoughts Monday regarding his late-game, fourth-down decision a day earlier that nearly proved costly in a 30-28 win over the Cleveland Browns. Staley also said that he has since met with team captain and wide receiver Keenan Allen, who was at home nursing a hamstring injury when he wrote in a since-deleted tweet, "WTF are we doing" moments after Staley's decision. Clinging to a two-point lead at FirstEnergy Stadium with 1:14 to play, Staley elected to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the Bolts' 46-yard line. Quarterback Justin Herbert's pass to wide receiver Mike Williams fell incomplete. With 1:10 remaining, the Browns took over and advanced the ball 10 yards before kicker Cade York missed a potential game-winning 54-yard field goal. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel: Too early to name QB vs. Vikings

MIAMI -- It's too early to tell whether Miami Dolphins rookie Skylar Thompson will start Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday. With quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater both in concussion protocol with no firm timeline to return, the Dolphins may turn to 2022 seventh-round pick Thompson to make his first career start and, ideally, snap a two-game losing streak. It's not, however, something McDaniel feels like he has enough information on to speculate this early in the week. "It's too soon for me to really pinpoint that," he said. "There's, again, I kind of have to wait and assess the whole situation, which I do not have in scope. What I do know is that Skylar will be practicing on Wednesday and hopefully Wednesday I'll have a better feel of the direction that we should go that's best for the football team." During Sunday's 40-17 loss to the New York Jets, Thompson filled in for...

Sources: Tyson Fury, Derek Chisora finalizing Dec. 3 trilogy bout

Tyson Fury and Derek Chisora are in the process of finalizing a Dec. 3 trilogy fight in the United Kingdom for Fury's WBC heavyweight title, sources told ESPN. Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs), the WBC heavyweight champion, claimed he was retired following a sixth-round TKO victory over Dillian Whyte in April, but reversed course in August with claims he would fight Chisora, a heavyweight gatekeeper, a third time. "The Gypsy King" then insisted in September he was in serious talks for a Dec. 3 bout with former champion Anthony Joshua that would represent one of the biggest events in all of boxing. However, discussions between Fury's promoter, Frank Warren, and Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, broke off Sept. 29, according to a source. Joshua accepted 40% to Fury's 60%, but the champion claimed last week that a self-imposed deadline had passed. In reality, a source said, Fury and Chisora are now in their third week of negotiations as the deal nears the finish line. "I've decided to come back...

Commanders' Ron Rivera: 'No regrets' with Carson Wentz trade

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera said he had no regrets about trading for quarterback Carson Wentz, adding that now they need to keep building around him. Rivera said the difference between his 1-4 Commanders and the rest of the NFC East teams, who are all 4-1 or better, comes down to the quarterback position. "The truth is that this is a quarterback-driven league," Rivera said. "And if you look at the teams that have been able to sustain success, they've been able to build it around a specific quarterback." Washington traded two draft picks in the offseason to acquire Wentz, giving up a second-round selection in this past draft and a conditional pick in 2023 that could become a second based on play time. Nick Saban hopes Alabama QB Bryce Young will be ready for Tennessee

Alabama football coach Nick Saban told reporters on Monday that he's hopeful quarterback Bryce Young will be ready to play Saturday at Tennessee. Young, who missed last weekend's win over Texas A&M because of shoulder soreness, was reevaluated by the training staff on Monday. "Hopefully we're going to try to get him ready to play this week," Saban said. "But this is something nobody can predict how quickly he'll get an opportunity to do what he needs to do." With Young sidelined, redshirt freshman Jalen Milroe got the start. He threw for three touchdowns but also committed three turnovers (two fumbles, one interception). Saban said he thought Milroe played "with a lot of anxiety." "I don't think he allowed himself to let his training sort of guide him and trust and believe in it so he can have success in executing plays," he said. "You can't turn the ball over and not execute plays like they're designed. ... So those things are all things that we...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield will be out "at least a couple of weeks'' with a high ankle sprain, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Mayfield suffered the injury late in the first half of Sunday's 37-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The first pick of the 2018 draft played most of the second half, but arrived for his postgame news conference wearing a walking boot on his left foot. "A little painful right now,'' Mayfield said after the game. "I'm not real sure exactly what it is. We'll examine that tomorrow and find out. So right now I'm managing the pain and learning to step in the boot.'' PJ Walker is expected to start Sunday against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams in the first game for interim head coach Steve Wilks. Head coach Matt Rhule was fired Monday after 1-4 start that left him with 11 losses in his past 12 games. Mayfield's subpar play contributed to this year's...

Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny sidelined for rest of season

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny suffered a broken fibula and injured the tibia in his left leg on Sunday and will miss the rest of the season, coach Pete Carroll said Monday. Penny's injury will require surgery. "It's going to be a haul for him. This is what they refer to as a tib/fib incident. He broke his fibula and cracked that, but it's the high-ankle sprain element of it that makes it difficult. And there's a particular surgery that they do to connect and tighten down those bones," Carroll said on Seattle Sports 710 AM on Monday. "It's going to take a number of months, so he's going to miss the season. It's really a heartbreaker for a kid that has really bounced back into the limelight of our program and for us and all, and for himself. He's been through such a long haul that it's really just a heartbreaking loss for him. He'd been doing great and everybody could see it and we've been so excited for him. ... It's a really clear surgery process and all...

Suspended QB Deshaun Watson returns to Browns facility

BEREA, Ohio -- Quarterback Deshaun Watson returned to the Cleveland Browns' training facility on Monday. Watson violated the NFL's personal conduct policy by committing sexual assault on massage therapists, as defined by the NFL. He is serving an 11-game suspension but can now participate in team meetings, meet individually with the coaches and work out at the team's facility. "We'll work through what we're allowed to do with him for the foreseeable future," said Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, who spoke with Watson earlier Monday morning. "He's in the meeting rooms with our guys. ... Which is great for him and for us to have him back with his teammates." Watson can't practice with the team until Nov. 14. He won't be eligible to play again until Week 13, when the Browns travel to face his former team, the Houston Texans, on Dec. 4. Since Aug. 30, Watson has been banned from having contact with Browns coaches or entering the practice facility. He's...

Carolina Panthers fire coach Matt Rhule after 1-4 start

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The decision to fire coach Matt Rhule on Monday came down to an inability to "get over the hump,'' according to Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper. "It's winning. It's winning,'' Tepper said. "Winning more this year than you did last year. Looking like you're going to win more than you did last year. By that definition, I don't think we're over the hump.'' Rhule was fired less than six full months after Tepper said it could take five, maybe six years to build an organization capable of sustained excellence. The decision came less than 24 hours after a 37-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers and less than three years into the seven-year, $62 million contract Rhule was given in January 2020 to turn around the Panthers the way he did college programs at Temple and Baylor. Rhule is still owed north of $40 million. He was fired with a record of 11-27, including this year's 1-4 start. Under Rhule, the Panthers went 1-27 when allowing 17 or more...

Phillies name Rob Thomson manager with two-year contract

After guiding the Phillies to their first playoff series victory since 2010, manager Rob Thomson had the interim removed from his title Monday. The Phillies announced they have signed Thomson to a two-year contract to remain as their manager through 2024, rewarding him for a turnaround that earned Philadelphia a wild-card berth. Thomson, 59, took over on June 3 when Joe Girardi was fired with the Phillies mired at 22-29. Philadelphia went 65-46 the rest of the regular season, finishing third in the National League East behind the Braves and Mets but still good enough for the Phillies to land their first postseason berth since 2011. In the wild-card round, Philadelphia swept the NL Central champion Cardinals in two games in St. Louis. The Phillies advanced to face the Braves in the Division Series, which begins Tuesday at Truist Park. Thomson is the first Canadian-born manager to lead a team in the postseason. "I could not be prouder of the group...

Source: San Francisco 49ers CB Moseley tore left ACL

An MRI on Monday confirmed that  San Francisco 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley tore the ACL in his left knee, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Moseley will have season-ending surgery to repair the knee that he injured in Sunday's 37-15 win over the Carolina Panthers. Moseley had an interception return for a touchdown and two pass breakups before his injury. He had emerged as one of the better corners in the league through the first four-plus weeks and looked poised to cash in as an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. Instead, the Niners will have to turn to one in a group that includes Deommodore Lenoir, Ambry Thomas or Samuel Womack III to step into his role. One other possibility is Jason Verrett. He opened his practice window to return from the physically unable to perform list last week, and though it might still be a bit before he can take on such a big role, he's nearing a return from a torn ACL...

Michigan coach Mike Hart back in Ann Arbor, eyes return to team

Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart released a statement Monday saying he is back in Ann Arbor and his health is trending in a positive direction. Hart suffered what was reported as a seizure on the sideline in the first quarter of Michigan's game against Indiana. He was placed on a stretcher, carted off the field and hospitalized overnight for evaluation. At the time, Michigan running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards were visibly emotional as Hart was being attended to. The Indiana coaches came out onto the field to check on Hart, who coached for the Hoosiers from 2017 to 2020 before joining Michigan, where he played football. As a player, Hart rushed for more than 5,000 yards and is still the career rushing leader for the fourth-ranked Wolverines. Hart, 36, was alert and moving when he was carted off the field and reached out to the team at halftime to tell them he was doing well. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh commented on Hart's situation after the game,...

Paul George 'totally fine' being Clippers' No. 2 behind Kawhi Leonard

LOS ANGELES --  Paul George set aside any ego and made it clear that Kawhi Leonard is the  LA Clippers' No. 1 option and that he is the second star in the All-Star duo's pecking order.  As they enter their fourth season together with championship expectations, George was asked if there are any past championship wing tandems that he and Leonard can use as a potential blueprint.  "Yeah, look at the [ Miami Heat] wing-wing DWade [Dwyane Wade] and  LeBron [James]," George said Sunday following the Clippers' 119-117 preseason loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves at Crypto.com Arena. "I think it just comes down to -- listen, Kawhi is the No. 1. And I am totally fine with that. I think I try to complement him with being able to take the load off of him. "Everybody says, 'Kawhi [and] you are 1 and 1, [or] 1A, 1B.' I'll publicly say, I'm the 2. Kawhi's the 1, I'm the 2. So that part we nipped in the bud. Like there's no ego when it...

Padres eliminate Mets, secure NLDS date with rival Dodgers

NEW YORK -- San Diego Padres starter Joe Musgrove knew Sunday was the biggest start of his life and felt sick to his stomach all day. The stakes were high. A winner-takes-all playoff finale pitching in front of a hostile New York City crowd at Citi Field. San Diego needed a strong start from the righty after the team struggled in Game 2 against the  New York Mets. As Musgrove contemplated the five-year, $100 million contract the Padres rewarded him with in August, he felt the weight of his team's season falling onto his shoulders. But as first pitch ticked closer and Musgrove warmed up in the Citi Field bullpen, he pulled aside Padres catcher Austin Nola to talk about the night ahead of them. "I'm going to have the best start of my life," Musgrove told Nola. His premonition came true, as Musgrove went seven innings, allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out five batters, propelling the Padres to a 6-0 victory and punching a ticket to the...

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kenny Pickett calls out low hit after loss: 'Felt like he went after my knee'

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Searching for somewhere to throw the ball late in the fourth quarter during Sunday's 38-3 loss,  Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback  Kenny Pickett scrambled toward the sideline at Highmark Stadium with Buffalo Bills defender Shaq Lawson hot in pursuit. As the rookie quarterback got rid of the ball, Lawson dove low, tackling Pickett below his waist to bring him to the ground. Pickett took exception to the hit and shoved the defensive end as he picked himself up off the turf. Pickett didn't stop there, and he briefly continued to go after Lawson until left tackle Chukwuma Okorafor and the rest of the Steelers' offensive linemen stepped in to break up the scuffle. "From my opinion, I felt like he went after my knee after I threw it," Pickett said. "That's it. You know, tempers flare. I don't care, I'm gonna keep playing to the last play of the game. That was it. All good with me." Pickett was assessed a penalty for...

Sean McVay on Rams' struggles: Matthew Stafford 'needs help'

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- After the Los Angeles Rams' offense struggled for the second game in a row and the team lost their second straight to fall to 2-3 on the season, head coach Sean McVay said his quarterback needs help. "I love Matthew Stafford," McVay said after a 22-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. "He is competing and doing everything in his power for this team. He needs some help. We've got to be able to help him." The Rams have scored just one touchdown in their last nine quarters, a 75-yard catch and run from Stafford to wide receiver Cooper Kupp in the second quarter of Sunday's game. Stafford is playing behind an offensive line that has dealt with injury after injury this season. Center Jeremiah Kolone, who started in place of an injured Coleman Shelton, who was starting in place of an injured Brian Allen, was the Rams' ninth different offensive lineman to start a game this season. Only left tackle Joe...

San Diego Padres eliminate New York Mets, secure NLDS date with rival Los Angeles Dodgers

NEW YORK -- Starter Joe Musgrove dominated the New York Mets, who mustered one hit out of the entire evening, as the San Diego Padres cruised to a 6-0 victory in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series on Sunday, punching a ticket to the NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego took Game 1 of the series against New York, teeing off against Max Scherzer to the tune of four homers in the 7-1 win, but struggled to muster much of an attack in Game 2 against Jacob deGrom, who allowed only two runs in six innings in a 7-3 loss. After a Game 2 in which the Mets' offense teed off on Padres pitching, San Diego needed Musgrove to come through during the biggest start of his career. Throughout the evening, Musgrove relied on his fastball, cutter, curveball and slider to keep complete dominance on the Mets' lineup. The Mets struggled to mount any offensive momentum against the Padres, with first baseman ...
